BIFMA

BIFMA testing

Micom Laboratories Inc. is a Canadian General Standards Board approved laboratory, based on ISO 17025, for ANSI/BIFMA testing. Our experts sit on all BIFMA standards committees directly related to office furniture testing. Cumulatively, we have more than 40 years of working with these standards as well as being part of the groups who authored them. We also test to the CAN/CGSB and ISO standards. Our experts sit of the various standards writing committees for these standards as well. Over the years, our experts have been nominated chairperson of some of those committees and also Head of the Canadian delegation for the ISO standards on furniture.

BIFMA testing services

Micom Laboratories Inc. offers BIFMA testing services for office seating, storage cabinets, desk products, lounge seating, panel systems and SOHO furniture. Our 11 000 square feet facility has a huge test capacity capable of addressing your needs in a timely fashion with accuracy and unsurpassed customer service. Our experts will be happy to review your product lines to assess accurately which BIFMA test need to get done on which product. This "test plan" then gets translated into a "bill of materials' which makes it easy for you to process the order at the plant to have the furniture sent to us. Our trained personnel will be happy to assemble your furniture if it requires installation; you don't need to send an installer crew. Each test gets digitally photographed, with the unit under test, for proper documentation. Each failure gets reviewed and documented by our experts as soon as it occurs and all the information gets sent to you electronically in the best possible delays. We also publish technical newsletters every time a BIFMA or a CGSB standard gets updated or issued.

Beyond BIFMA testing

To address your specific needs we can also work with you to create your own internal standards and then test to them. We do this on a regular basis to help customers investigate field failures and also to validate product features not covered by the BIFMA standards. You would like to create your own product test specifications? Ask us, we will be happy to do that for you. A typical example is a test protocol developed by Micom for baryatric chairs. There is no BIFMA standard for this type of product at the moment albeit these products have been on the market for some time already. We have worked with some of our customers to create test protocols to test that type of product. In this case we have started from the BIFMA chair and lounge seating standards and have adapted each of the tests as a function of the targeted increased mass rating.

ANSI BIFMA standards

Micom Laboratories Inc. offers more than BIFMA standard furniture testing to its customer. For example we can do package testing on your product (ISTA 3A, rule 181) to help you assess your packaging's performance be it to certification or for cost savings purposes. We also have climatic chambers for temperature and humidity cycling to help predict how you products will perform while exposed to their storage and or shipping environment. We can also do material testing on products, components or material such as ASTM D-1037 on particle board, G-155 for UV exposure, finishes tests, etc...
