This standard only provides a visual aid which allows to assess the degree of rusting of a painted steel surface. In other words, this method supplies the tools that are required to appraise the extent of the visible surface corrosion, but it does not mention test conditions that will lead to the evaluation of the surface. Thus, this test protocol has to be paired with a standard that will induce, on an accelerated basis, the deterioration of the sample in a controlled environment. For instance, ASTM B117 , ASTM D714 and ASTM G85 are examples of test protocols that may be associated with the ASTM D610 standard.
ASTM D610 test
The goal of ASTM D610 is to provide the means to assess, in a standardized way, the extent and the distribution of the visible rusted surface. Indeed, it is through the photographs that are present in this method that it is possible to evaluate the properties of the rusted surface. Moreover, by appraising the amount of rust that is beneath or through a paint film, it is possible to determine if the coating system ought to be replaced or repaired. However, in order to achieve this point, it is necessary to pair this method with an appropriate standard that will induce the degradation of the sample through an exposure to a corrosive environment. As a matter of fact, corrosion corresponds to the decaying of a metal that has been exposed for a long period of time to an oxygenic and moist environment. Furthermore, the pH of the water, the temperature and the presence of a corroding agent such as salt are factors that will affect the corrosion rate. Hence, a corrosion test is a method that relies on this principle in order to simulate, on an accelerated basis, a warm and humid environment that will instate the electro-chemical process.
