ASTM D6055 and ASTM D6179 tests now offered at Micom Laboratories

Micom Laboratories is pleased to announce that it now offers ASTM D6055 and ASTM D6179 tests as part of its offering for packaging test services . The purpose of those standards is to test the integrity of the container and the capacity of the content to resist handling. The difference between those two test protocols is the intensity of handling that the samples undergo. Indeed, ASTM D6055 portrays a normal handling while ASTM D6179 simulates a rough one. More precisely, the methods described in ASTM D6055 tend to characterize the response of the shipping unit while it is being handled by a load handling equipment. Whereas, the tests depicted in ASTM D6179 aim to assess the ability of the receptacle to withstand harsh handling through drop, tip, tipover and rolling tests.

ASTM D6055 and ASTM D6179 tests

ASTM D6055 and ASTM D6179 simulate handling conditions that unitized loads, large cases and crates may encounter daily. On the one hand, ASTM D6055 assesses the response of the contents and of the container to a breaking hazard that may occur while they are being handled by a mechanical handling equipment. More precisely, the aspects that may be investigated by that method are: repeated handling of various load-handling machine, repeated lifting, repeated side or sling compression and grabhooks horizontal pressure. Moreover, the test methods that are described in ASTM D6055 are designed to be employed with the actual equipment that will be utilized in the load handling. On the other hand, ASTM D6179 evaluates the response of the contents and of the container to a tough handling. Indeed, it is through the use of drop, tip, tipover or rolling tests that it is possible to appraise the ability of the shipping unit to endure rough handling. Also, the damages observed in those tests give valuable insight on the potential enhancement of the design of the container. Indeed, this is due to the fact that those spoils may correlate in a qualitative way with the ones that may be observed during the actual distribution.
