New ASTM D4169 version released in 2016

A new ASTM D4169 version was released in June 2016 by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM).  The ASTM D4169 is a standard practice for performance testing of shipping containers and systems.

This standard replaces the previous 2014 version and aims at providing, under laboratory controlled environment, uniform basis of evaluating the ability of shipping units to withstand distribution environments. For that purpose, the packaged products are exposed to different hazard elements encountered in the package distribution cycle.

The changes in the 2016 version are mainly affecting the random vibration tests, more specifically the Vehicle Vibration simulating the Truck profile.

In the previous D4169 test version each Assurance Level had its own corresponding vibration profile. In the 2016 version, the Assurance Levels were abandoned for Random Vibration option. Therefore, the vibration tests are not affected anymore by the predefined Assurance Level. As a result, three test levels are now proposed and are distributed in one hour loops on each shipping orientation as follow:

  • Low Level: 40 minutes (0.40 Grms)
  • Medium Level: 15 minutes (0.54 Grms)
  • High Level: 5 minutes (0.70 Grms)

As a matter of fact, the Medium Level shares the same power spectral density levels as the ISTA “Steel Spring Truck”. The recommended three hours test duration is still unchanged where no specific instructions are advising to do differently.

The ASTM D4169 Vehicle Vibration test with Truck Profile has significantly changed since the previous version. Even though your package was tested on the 2014 release, a retest will be required for compliance to the new standard if your distribution cycle involves Vehicle Vibration.
