ISTA 1H

Random Vibration of Packaged Products Over 150 lbs (68 kg)

ISTA 1H is a test for packaged products weighting over 150 lb (68 kg) (random vibration). Micom offers ISTA 1H testing as part of its Packaging testing services.  The ISTA 1H test is part of the ISTA series 1 tests. It is one of the basic test procedure and is to be looked at as a screening test.

ISTA 1H Uses and Factors to be Considered

ISTA 1H Testing | Micom Laboratories ISTA 1H is an integrity test for individually packaged products weighing over 150 lbs (68 kg). It can be used to evaluate the performance of a packaged product and compare the relative performance of package and product design alternatives. The package and product are considered together and not separately. The package and the product need to be tested together. ISTA 1H does not cover specific conditions of transit such as moisture, pressure or unusual handling. If you need to address these distribution hazards, ISTA 2B, ISTA 3B or ASTM D4169 should be considered.

The ISTA 1H test calls for the use of a random vibration test. To use fixed displacement vibration instead of random vibration, use ISTA 1B. Usually, a mechanical vibration test is less expensive than a random vibration test.

A minimum of 1 sample needs to be tested. For final packaging design purposes, a higher number of samples is recommended. Five samples or more is typically recommended for this test. However, testing only one sample is mandatory.

Packages that have already been subjected to the rigors of transportation prior to the test cannot be assumed to represent standard conditions. In order to ensure testing in optimal condition, products and packages shipped to accredited laboratories for testing must be over-packaged for shipment to the laboratory or repackaged in new packaging at the laboratory.

ISTA 1H test sequence

The tests shall be performed on each test sample in the sequence indicated in the following table:

Sequence No. Test Category Test Type Test Level For ISTA Certification
1 Vibration Random Overall Grms level of 1.15 Required
2 Shock

(Alternative methods allowed – select one test type)

Drop 6 in (150 mm) Required
Incline Impact (Conbur) 69 in (1.7 m) per second impact velocity
Horizontal Impact 69 in (1.7 m) per second velocity change
3 Shock Rotational Edge Drop 8 in (200 mm) Required when not testing face 1
